Week 6 Assignments

We are all Task 5 students now!  Yippee!!
Please bear with me as I continue to refine this Essentials process.  I am learning along with all of you some new methods and practices.  As I give suggestions and direction, remember to tailor them to your child's abilities.  I welcome your input and suggestions to help this become a great learning environment for your children.
EEL
·      Daily Copying and Memorizing Charts A - H.  Copying charts is a great learning tool!
·     Daily Practice Sentences (1-5) Analytical Task Sheet (1-5) -- Task 5 through the Compound structure only.
·     Reminder - Additional help for the Task Sheet is in a Special Section of Week 3.
·     Week 6 EEL editing exercises.

CHARTS - Students should be copying more than one chart each week.   They will memorize it over time, but this method will get more information into their heads in a shorter period of time.  As they memorize a chart continue to have them write it out once a week, then once every two weeks, and finally once a month to keep it in their long term memory.

IEW
Parents - Use proofreading marks on rough draft.

Students -   Write a final draft of "Mayflower" paper and make two copies.  On the first copy include margin indicators, on the second copy illustrate it and turn in.
·     Be sure to make all corrections indicated on your rough draft.
·     Add:   the sentence openers ( 2, 3, & 6), and a creative title from your clincher (final sentence).
·     Mark paper in the margins as instructed on one copy.
·     Illustrate your final draft without margin notes - turn in.
·     Follow the checklist on pg.35.
·     Each vocabulary word used earns a pebble; Prize for the most vocabulary words used.

If you child has already mastered Chart A (proven in class), they may write out their next chart from memory at home and bring it to class.  I will accept the level of memorized work you require for your home and we will add a piece to their "Grammar Puzzle".  I hope this will help with the time issue.  The goal is to get the information into their heads.

IEW
The assignment this week is a 3 paragraph story.  However, FIRST year students may combine paragraphs 2 & 3 into one paragraph.  So the entire assignment ends up being a 2 paragraph story rather than 3 paragraphs.
Complete KWO, brainstorming, and rough draft using the Rough Checklists.
1st paragraph & KWO is on page 24 of the US History Student Bk. with brainstorming activity to help with action verbs, -LY words, & quality adjectives on page 25.
2nd & 3rd paragraph & KWO is on page 26 of Student Bk.  If you are going to combine the 2 paragraphs then use the KWO and rough checklist for paragraph 3.    The brainstorming activities for these paragraphs are on page 27.

RECAP:
This week, write a 2 or 3 paragraph rough draft.
Next week we will edit the rough draft, add more detail, and write the final copy using the Final Checklist in Lesson Six.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
